The Cake

Here is Kate's cake. This cake has been consuming my thoughts day and night for the lase week. I started this cake on Thursday night. I baked all the layers, and froze them. Then on Friday night, after Kate had fallen asleep, I was finally able to start decorating. It took a whole lot longer than I thought.

Pieced together with strawberry filling between the layers.

Frosting the sides and tops.

Actually starting to feel like I'm making some progress.

Frosting the Turrets (sugar cones).

Add a couple of princesses, and WA LA! After 5 cake mixes, freezing time, and hours upon hours of decorating, The Princess castle cake is complete!

(I still have to add flags to the turrets, but you get the idea.)

P.S. I really want to weigh this thing. I think it's probably close to 15 pounds! And Kate hasn't seen the cake yet. It's hiding in the Laundry Room.

"Mom is Great! She feeds us chocolate cake!"

Part 1:

(Either ignore the guy, just listen while you're doing something else, or pretend it's really Bill Cosby.)

Growing up, my parents had several records of Bill Cosby's. Some of my favorites were Noah, The Dentist, and the Grandparents. But my all time favorite was Chocolate Cake for Breakfast.

Part 2:

Today Kate got to celebrate her Birthday at Preschool. As part of her celebration she got to take a treat to share with her classmates.

Last night as we were discussing what treat she wanted to take to share with her classmates, she says, "Mom, I want to take pink cupcakes with pink icing and sprinkles. So that when the boys ask for like a green one or a blue one, Miss Roxi can say 'Sorry there's only pink!'"

Part 3:

This morning it wasn't chocolate cake, it was pink cupcakes with pink icing and sprinkles.

(These are the ones Kate frosted.)

Am I a bad mommy?

Kate's Birthday Cake

Kate turned 4 yesterday. I still can't believe my little girl is already 4. Time flies. I think time has somehow sped up as I've gotten older. Anyways, Kate decided she wanted to have "A Bad Case of Stripes" birthday party. "A Bad Case of Stripes" is a children's book by David Shannon. If you haven't read it, you should. It's very good, and it's Kate's favorite story.

It begins, "Camilla Cream loved lima beans. But she never ate them. All of her friends hated lima beans, and she wanted to fit in. Camilla was always worried about what other people thought of her.

Today she was fretting even more than usual. It was the first day of school, and she couldn't decide what to wear. There were so many people to impress! She tried on forty-two outfits, but none seemed quite right. She put on a pretty red dress and looked in the mirror. Then she screamed."

The story goes on to describe just how bad Camilla's bad case of stripes is. The doctors are stumped, as are the specialists and the experts. Then a sweet old lady knocks at the door, and thinks she has the cure. To find out what the cure is, you have to READ THE BOOK! I'm not telling!

Anyways, this is the cake I came up with for Kate's "A Bad Case of Stripes" party. The green dots around the bottom are supposed to be lima beans (even though they look more like peas). Kate couldn't tell a difference.

Anyways, it's a cute story, and it sends a great message. The message I got from this story:

NEVER BE AFRAID TO BE YOURSELF!
If you've read the story what message did you get?

Andie's First Birthday

I was browsing through my pictures today wondering what to write about, when I came upon the pictures from Andie's first birthday. Boom! It hit me. These pictures show Andie's personality PERFECTLY!
For Andie's party we had family over for cake and ice cream. After everone arrived, Andie opened her presents. Of course, like any one-year-old, she was more interested in the wrapping paper and boxes than she was the presents. It was fun for Kate because she got to open about half the presents for her little sis.

Then it was time for the cake!

For any of you first-time-mommies out there, Walmart gives you a free mini-cake when you order the child's first birthday cake there. This was Andie's free mini-cake. I expected it to be much smaller.

When Kate was a baby, being the first time mommy that I was, I fed her every meal so she wouldn't get her clothes dirty. When Andie came around, I fed her minimal amounts of the basic baby foods to make sure she didn't have any food allergies, and then she ate whatever we ate. And she fed herself.
So, back to the cake. At first Andie was pretty dainty with her cake, touching the icing, and licking it off her fingers. It took her awhile to realize there was actually cake in there too. Once she realized there was cake, she started taking handfuls.

Then my little sister, bless her heart, thought it would be funny to get Andie to start playing Peek-A-Boo. Oh, the innocence of the childless. Her turn will come, and oh, the sweet taste of revenge will finally be MINE! (Oh, did I really just say that out loud? Oops!)
Needless to say, after the Peek-A-Boo incident there was no holding Andie back any longer. She continued to dig, and I mean DIG, into her cake. She even doubled fisted it at times.

The end result? One completely happy, completely full, and completely messy baby!

She even had to have a "hose down" in the sink before we could even put her in the tub.

After the sugar high wore off (about 3 hours later), she slept soundly all night. I think I would call the party a success! I think...
